Exothermic vs endothermic

Exothermic reactions release heat (combustion, freezing). Endothermic reactions absorb heat (photosynthesis, melting).

Enthalpy (ΔH)

ΔH is the heat exchanged at constant pressure. Negative ΔH = exothermic, positive ΔH = endothermic.

Calorimetry

q = m·c·ΔT lets you calculate heat absorbed by a substance given its mass, specific heat, and temperature change.
