Testing

Nomenclature is the "grammar" of chemistry — a shared system of rules that lets any chemist, anywhere in the world, read a name and know exactly which molecule is being described. Today's lesson is a testing lesson: a quick recap of the naming rules you've learned this unit, followed by a short practice set to check how solid your skills are.

Why Nomenclature Matters

IUPAC (the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) exists to keep chemical naming unambiguous and consistent across the whole scientific community (Talbot, p.172). Without agreed rules, the same compound could have dozens of local or historical names, causing confusion in labs, industry, and safety labelling.
