Nomenclature – Ternary Compounds (II)

In the previous lesson you met oxyanions – polyatomic ions made of an element bonded to several oxygen atoms, like SO₄²⁻ or NO₃⁻ – and learned that IUPAC gives these a consistent, unambiguous naming system so that chemists everywhere understand exactly which compound is meant (Talbot, p.172). This lesson builds on that by looking at what happens when an element forms more than one oxyanion, how we name the acids derived from these ions, and how we combine everything when a transition metal cation is also involved.
